Paying it forward is one of the most simple concepts to understand and act on, yet so many people chose to concern themselves with only… themselves. Some people just can’t be fixed. But there are those who maybe just need a light push. If they knew how lending a hand and helping someone out can actually help themselves, too, then maybe there would be a few more good deeds done in this world.

It depends on how far you want to take it, but helping out in any way can be great for everyone. From holding the door for someone to making a large donation to help a non profit organization; paying it forward can change lives.

It looks like the United States as a whole is doing better every year with its charitable giving. According to Giving USA, charitable giving in the U.S. rose for the fifth consecutive year two years ago. Americans donated more than $358 billion which is a 7.1% increase from the year before.

Reputable non profit organizations, specifically, contributed approximately $905.9 billion to the U.S. economy in 2013 and there are an estimated 1.4 million registered non profits with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Volunteering has been on the rise lately as well, which is exciting to see. People are beginning to realize that helping out like this can not only benefit the people in need, but also themselves. If you’re a volunteer and you want to help a non profit organization, there are plenty of options available to you.

According to Volunteer Ireland, about 78% of people who spent time volunteering said that volunteering lowers their stress levels and more than 95% of volunteers stated that it gives their life a sense of purpose. Volunteer opportunities are all over the country and can really help many people.

Bank of America Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy reports that of all high net worth donors, 63% of them admit that their chief motivation for donating is “giving back to the community.”
